Since 1972, the National Senior Citizens Law Center has worked to promote the independence and well-being of low-income elderly and persons with disabilities, especially women, people of color, and other disadvantaged minorities.

Through advocacy, litigation, and the education and counseling of local advocates, we seek  to ensure the health and economic security of those with limited income and resources, and access to the courts for all.

Because we believe in publicly-funded safety net programs, we work to preserve and strengthen Medicaid, Medicare Part D, Social Security and SSI. To guarantee fair treatment, we work for greater access to federal courts for citizens and for better enforcement of consumer’s legal rights in safety net programs.

Vision

We envision an America in which elderly people and people with disabilities can live in dignity and safety and remain as independent as possible for as long as possible. Where they are free from the worries and pain of poverty or the lack of health care, and they are able to contribute to their families and societies to the best of their abilities.

Our Beliefs

We believe that:

• Government should provide the safety net for older adults and people with disabilities.

• All of society benefits from a strong safety net.

• Spending taxpayer dollars on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid is one of the fundamental reasons for taxing people in the first place.

• People lose hope and the social fabric frays if society is indifferent to the inevitability of aging and loss of capacity.

• Government support for low-income older adults and those with disabilities acknowledges that no one is an island; that chance makes each of us vulnerable to disabilities and that none of us will avoid death. We needed one another’s help to start in life, and we will need one another’s help when we are old or badly hurt.

• Courts must remain open for justice, allowing access for all.
