Lazarus Speaks at Northwestern
Policy Counsel Simon Lazarus participated in a Northwestern University School of Law Symposium on Justice Stevens' Legacy. The event honored now-retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, a 1947 graduate of Northwestern Law School.
NSCLC’s Work Praised at Justice Stevens Event
During an event to honor Justice Stevens, Dean Erwin Chemerinsky of University of California-Irvine Law School spontaneously credited Herb Semmel and NSCLC for coming up with the idea of using “preemption” as a path to federal court for Medicaid beneficiaries affected by unlawful state denials of federally mandated benefits, and other victims of unlawful state policies.
The event consisted of panels of mainly academic experts on Justice Stevens’ record on issues relating to executive power, religious freedom, his “Trajectory on the Court,” and his “Methods of Interpretation,” as well as a moderated Q & A session with the Justice, a luncheon and a dinner, at all of which Justice Stevens also delivered remarks and took questions.
