Protecting Low-Income Assisted Living Residents

NSCLC recently published an issue brief focusing on Medicaid payment for assisted living. One concern is the unfair way in which Medicaid-eligible residents are sometimes treated by assisted living facilities that are certified to accept Medicaid reimbursement.

Preventing this unfair treatment is one of NSCLC's primary advocacy priorities for 2010.  We are working with the Assisted Living Consumer Alliance and other partners to address these issues.

Please let us know if you have any experience with any of the following issues:

1.       A Medicaid-certified assisted living facility refusing to accept Medicaid coverage from a Medicaid-eligible resident.

2.       An assisted living facility voluntarily giving up its Medicaid certification, and then being unable to accept Medicaid coverage from a Medicaid-eligible resident.

3.       An assisted living facility requiring "supplemental" payments from a family member or friend of a Medicaid-eligible resident.
